The Governor's Utah Economic Summit 07
If you ever needed a feel good about Utah's economy, the Governor's Economic Summit 07 was a megadose of validation. Numerous speakers addressed Utah's advantages. In fact, our only negative right now appears to be that our 2.3 percent unemployment rate is making it hard on inventors. (How would you like to be Michigan at 7.7%). Currently there are over 1000 unfilled engineering jobs in Utah.
The Governor also listed a host of recent honors Utah has received. Several studies have ranked Utah in the top 5 states for doing business. Last week we were named the most dynamic economy in the country.
One highlight of the program for me was hearing the speedpitches of 5 Utah companies. Brock Blake did a good Ryan Seacrest impersonation and we saw five growing companies seek funding from local Angles. We then got to hear the Angles discuss the pros and cons of each of the companies and their pitches. In the end, D.A.M. Truck Tools walked away with an investment.
It has been said that the most frightening words in the English language are "I'm from the government and I am here to help." If Gov. Huntsman's probusiness administration keeps focus, the saying may no longer be true.
