Utah Entrepreneur Challenge/Technology Titans
For the last two years I have had the opportunity to mentor a team in the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge. It is interesting to see what new business ideas are being developed by Utah's college students. The big winner this year is Zinch.com, a site which allows students to create a detailed portfolio about themselves for use by Universities in the admissions process. It also allows Universities to search student information to get the students that the University is looking for. (Apparently not me for ending half my sentences in prepositions). Based on the early results, Zinch.com is headed for the big time.
Not only were ten up and coming companies honored, several of them hold out hope for improving our lives. Heightened Technologies has developed a process for treating soil contaminated with PCBs and other chemicals.
Jeiko Industries has developed technology which allows ethanol to be produced from algae. Jeiko's method produced more than 150 times the amount of enthanol than corn. (It also avoids food riots in Mexico caused by inflation in corn prices).
The U has also started a new competition - Tech Titans Innovation Challenge. There were more than 100 entries. Some of the winning innovations includes a silicon-based micro-camera for use in cell phones, a non-invasive cancer therapy delivery technology, and a multiple sequence alignment of DNA using bioinformatics.

I agree, Zinch is headed for the big time. That said, most of the top ten teams are also headed for big things!
