Trade Secrets Really Do Matter

One of the most common competitive threats that many companies face is employees stealing the company's trade secrets (or other confidential information). Usually, the employee leaves the company and goes into competition. Occasionally, however, the employee simply tries to earn some extra money by selling the information to the company's competitors.

A couple of years ago, a secretary at Coca-Cola got her hands on the secret formula for Coke. She tried to sell it to rival Pepsi-Co. Fortunately for Coke and unfortunately for her, Pepsi-Co. promptly called the authorities. Her reward - 8 years free room and board and a nice jumpsuit. I don't know if they use striped or pink in women's prison. At least she won't have to worry about paying the rent.

The case is a reminder to all business owners that they need to take reasonable steps to keep their confidential information confidential. If you don't you are likely to find your former employees stealing away your customers.
