Its All About Class
In some countries you are born into a specific class (socioeconomic) and can never get out. Other countries, like ours, people are highly mobile and can move up or down the socioeconomic ladder fairly quickly. In countries without a caste system, it is often difficult to determine where you fit (if you care) - and some have argued that a new class - the Creative class - has developed which does not fit into the traditional leisure class, working class, lower class, etc. mold. In his book The Rise of the Creative Class, Prof. Richard Florida argues that the future economy of cities lies in their ability to attract and retain the Creative class.
. In America class is viewed more complexly than into what family you were born or how much money you make. Your class - as seen by others - includes what you do for a living, your educational level, how much you make and what your assets are. The New York Times did an extensive survey and came out with a interactive grid that lets you determine where you stand. Yes the survey had some problems - lawyers were ranked as the second highest occupation based on prestige - just behind physicians and well ahead of CEOs. However, it is fun to play with and see where - according to the survey - society thinks you stand.
