Dark Days at Qualcomm

Things just aren't going well at Qualcomm these days. First, the International Trade Commission granted an injunction barring the importation of certain chips made by Qualcomm which infringe patents owned by Broadcom. Now the United States District Court for the Southern District of California has ruled that Qualcomm cannot enforce two of its patents because it failed to disclose them to an industry standards board. The Court also required Qualcomm to pay Broadcom's attorneys fees. (Broadcom had 20 attorneys listed as lead attorneys and who knows how many dozens more working on the case).

Qualcomm announced recently that it was increasing its litigation budget to $200 million a year to deal with patent issues. Apparently they did not appreciate that they would also be increasing Broadcom's litigation budget.
