You Can't Patent a Phrase
I hate to dig up bad memories but I was reading an article about spontaneous trademarks and one of the marks mentioned was THREE-PEAT. You remember back when Chicago was on a roll and Utah almost won an NBA championship. There, but for a push-off, goes us. Yes Chicago got their championships and sports commentators sent IP attorneys over the edge by mentioning 3-4 times per game "the patented phrase THREE-PEAT".
Unfortunately, the commentators did not do their research. You can't patent a phrase. You can, however, trademark the phrase if it is used in association with goods or services in commerce. And yes, THREE-PET is a registered trademark for mugs and other memorabilia.
Now if you could come up with a method for getting the JAZZ back into the finals - you could probably patent that.
