The Best of the Competitive Insight - Making it fun

Every week, The Competitive Insight lists the Utah patents and trademarks pursued by Utah businesses and individuals  These filings are insight into the competitive landscape here in Utah.  They allows you to see what people are doing well, and what people are doing poorly.  Perhaps it will even give insight into an underserved niche.  I'll be giving recognition to the most interesting ones that come across my desk.  Here's my favorites from this week.

Patent of the Week

7,290,749 Concrete form systems with concrete ties L. Alma Jessop, Herriman, UT; Derrel L. Spencer, Lehi, UT Cactus Holdings, LLC, Lehi, UT

While the title was initially boring, the patent itself describes an interesting concept.  It's basically building blocks that hold concrete in a form until its hard.  It seemed to be Legos (tm) with a "Tim Allen / Home Improvement" boost.  However, the thing that cinched it as this weeks winner is the amount of potential work savings.  Assuming it works as it says it does, you bring your set of building blocks and you can have your concrete form up in no time.  This sounds much better than building them out of wood, as I've always seen.  As a bonus, you can make Tim Allen grunts while doing it.

Trademark of the Week

GE Money Bank Federal Savings Bank Salt Lake City, UT

I had to laugh after I saw this trademark.  This made me think of the Rose they bring your wife when you purchase a car at a dealership.  Money always seems fun when you make it (investing) or spend it.  Paying it back never seems as much fun.  This logo capitalizes on the spending feeling, as far as I can tell.  I guess it was FUNancing while the feeling lasted.

Bonus Trademark of the Week

People Helping People Salt Lake City, UT

People helping People is a fantastic organization that helps low-income mothers learn to become employed.  It is a great empowerment organization.  Their logo attempts to show this reaching for the stars with the aid of a wonderful benefactor.  Now here's my guilty confession:  I saw the benefactor go splat, when the ladder climber reached makes it up a couple of rungs.  Even wonderful programs have to obey the laws of physics.
