Powerful Trademarks
Some companies are simply masterful at getting trademark recognition. Some of the best are beer companies. Think about the most memorable adds from virtually any year, several will be from breweries. However, you do not have to spend a lot if you work things right.
The small island of La Reunion is no exception. By far the most powerful brand on the island from a marketing point of view is Bourbon beer. Ironically, the name is not mentioned frequently. The producers have a lame website and they distribute numerous other beers. However, the beer's slogan is virtually a cultural icon.
Reunion Island used to be home to the Dodo bird. The packaging for Bourbon beer includes a cartoon drawing of the Dodo bid. On virtually every market, bar and store that sells Bourbon beer is the slogan "La Dodo le la," along with Bourbon's Dodo bird. The phrase is creole for "The Dodo is here" On some stores virtually the entire store front other than the windows is a green, yellow and red advertisement for Bourbon beer. Many t-shirts from La Reunion include the slogan. There are even t-shirts with cartoons of an overweight man's bulging belly along with "La Dodo le la." If any one ever asks if you speak creole, just respond La Dodo le la (phonetically - La Dodo lay la). It will bring a smile to any local's face.
Spending a ton of money on advertising is great for brand recognition. It is even better, however, when your distributors and society does it for you.
